Best Flooring for Bathrooms

What to Consider for Bathroom Flooring

True waterproofing

Not water-resistant. Waterproof. A bathroom floor will be wet regularly, and the floor structure has to handle moisture without swelling, warping, or growing mold underneath. Many products are marketed as waterproof, but when you read the fine print, it’s limited to 48 hours. No flooring will stand up to flooding and standing water over long periods of time. Once the water makes its way to the baseboards, the moisture will seep into the subfloor and cause issues with the flooring from below.

Slip resistance

Wet feet on a smooth floor are how bathroom falls happen. Look for textured surfaces, embossed finishes (aka EIR or embossed in register), or wear layers designed for slip resistance.

Easy cleaning

Bathroom floors get cleaned more often than most floors. Surfaces that wipe down quickly without specialty products win.

Luxury Vinyl

The modern bathroom standard. Waterproof, soft underfoot, easy to clean, and available in convincing stone, tile, and wood visuals and textures. Click-lock LVP installs quickly even in tight bathroom layouts.

Sheet Vinyl

The traditional bathroom answer and still one of the best. Sheet vinyl can cover the entire bathroom floor in one continuous piece (no seams in most rooms), which is a real advantage in a wet space. Paired with coving to keep the water from drifting into cabinets, it’s clear why it’s been a standard for decades. Cost-effective and remarkably realistic in today's products.

Laminate

A newer option that works well in bathrooms, the new waterproof laminates have sealed edges and locking mechanisms. The look of hardwood without the moisture vulnerability.

What We'd Avoid in Bathrooms

Solid Hardwood. Real wood and bathrooms don't mix. The humidity alone is enough to cause problems over time, even before any water exposure. Solid hardwood is particularly susceptible to moisture and humidity.

Engineered wood can stand the test of time due to its structural stability, but if you’re not regularly venting the humidity from your bathroom and you like to make it into a sauna, choosing another option is best. If you love the look of wood in your bathroom, LVP with a convincing wood visual is the right substitute.

Carpet. Carpet will hold onto moisture and creates a space that’s ideal for mold and mildew. Even with a moisture barrier, we don’t recommend carpet in your bathroom.
