Traditional vs. Modern Waterproof Laminate
Waterproof laminate costs more than the standard product, but in kitchens, bathrooms, and laundry rooms, it's worth it. Our showroom teams can show you which products are waterproof.
Traditional Laminate
Traditional laminate can handle the occasional spill if you wipe it up quickly, but standing water will eventually swell the fiberboard core and damage the floor.
Waterproof Laminate
Waterproof laminate uses sealed plank edges that make it waterproof. It can handle kitchen spills and the kind of moisture that would destroy traditional laminate.
How It's Built
What Laminate Actually Is
A laminate plank is a printed image (the design layer) protected by a clear wear layer on top, bonded to a dense fiberboard core for stability. The wear layer is represented by an AC (Abrasion Class) from 1 to 6 where the higher number is more durable. The wear layer and construction makes modern laminate resistant to fading, staining, scratches, dents, and gouges.
Laminate floors float over an underlayment, locked together at the edges with a tongue-and-groove system. They don't bond to the subfloor, which means they can be installed over almost any flat surface such as wood subfloors and concrete slabs.
Common Questions About Laminate
Good for kids and pets?
Absolutely. Laminate is the most scratch-and dent-resistant hard surface floor available, and the Triple Warranty backs it up.
Is it hard to maintain?
No. Sweep, vacuum, or dry mop as much as needed. Periodically spray-and-wipe with a cleaner like the Bona Cleaning System. Wet mopping is not recommended. For spills, wipe up as soon as possible with dry or damp cloth. Avoid flooding the area and make sure to dry the floor.
Will it match my sample?
Yes, every time. Laminate is a digital reproduction, so color is consistent from sample to floor.
Will it ever scratch or dent?
No floor is scratch or dent-proof, but laminate comes closest. Sharp objects or heavy impacts can damage all hard surfaces.
How long will it last?
S&G has been selling and installing laminate since it launched in the early '90s, and many of those original floors are still going strong. Proper care is the key.
Where can I install laminate?
Almost anywhere in your home: living rooms, dining rooms, bedrooms, home offices, basements, hallways and stairs.
Can it go in kitchens, bathrooms, or laundry rooms?
Yes, with waterproof laminate. Rooms where water might be present need a waterproof laminate. Ask your S&G consultant which products are waterproof.

Quality you can trust.
A warranty is only as good as the company standing behind it. We've been standing behind ours since 1948.
Every product we sell carries its manufacturer's warranty, covering performance over time. The specifics vary by product and brand, but the standard doesn't. We only carry flooring we trust to last.
