Understanding Sound Ratings

IIC (Impact Insulation Class)

Measures how well a floor blocks sounds from traveling between stories. Most commonly impact sounds such as footsteps, dropped objects, and dragged chairs. Higher numbers are better. Most condo associations require IIC 50 or higher; premium installations can hit IIC 65+.

STC (Sound Transmission Class)

Measures airborne sound from within the same room, things like voices, TV, music, or how loud your footsteps are to you. Most condo associations require STC 50-55, but it's not uncommon for requirements to be as high as STC 70+.

A note on real-world performance

Lab ratings are tested under specific conditions. Real-world results depend on your subfloor, ceiling structure, and existing construction. Even an excellent floor can underperform on a hollow subfloor; a modest floor can sound great on a well-built one.

Plush Carpet Over Premium Pad

Still the gold standard for sound absorption. Carpet absorbs high-frequency reflections and reduces impact noise; a quality pad adds further dampening. Wool plush over an 8-pound rebond pad is hard to beat acoustically.

Hard Surface + Premium Sound Underlayment

Cork Flooring

A niche option, but cork is naturally sound-absorbing and lives up to the reputation. It lacks waterproofing and can be a much higher price per sq ft, but it is the best hard surface material for sound abatement. We can source cork flooring as a special order if it's the right fit.
