Bedrooms are the one room in the house where comfort underfoot can take priority over everything else. There's no foot traffic to compete with, no spills more dramatic than a glass of water, and no moisture issues. The decision comes down to what feels best when you step out of bed in the morning.
Cold floors on bare feet on winter mornings are unpleasant. Carpet and floors that are softer underfoot are better insulators and feel warmer to the touch. Hard surface flooring either needs to have area rugs on it, or radiant heating below to avoid a cold feeling when you step out of bed.
A bedroom floor that absorbs the sound of footsteps (yours, the kids', the dog's) makes the room feel quieter and more restful.
If the rest of the upper floor is hardwood, you may want to continue that into the bedroom for visual continuity. If you want a clear separation between common areas and private space, carpet does that best.
The traditional and still most popular bedroom flooring. Soft underfoot, warm, quiet, and forgiving of being walked on barefoot at 6 a.m. Wool, nylon, polyester, and Smartstrand (Triexta) all work well in bedrooms depending on budget and feel preference.
Solid or engineered hardwood gives bedrooms a clean, continuous look — especially if the rest of the upper floor is hardwood. We even have underlayment that can be used for hardwood and will help dampen sound. Add area rugs near the bed for the warmth and comfort hardwood doesn't provide on its own.
Premium luxury vinyl comes with sound-dampening cores, and when combined with a quality underlayment, it can reduce the noise substantially while providing a softer feel underfoot.
Budget-friendly option with the hardwood look. Modern laminate is convincing and quiet enough for bedroom use, especially with a sound-dampening underlayment.
