What to Consider for Hypoallergenic Flooring

Allergen retention

Soft surfaces with high pile trap allergens so they don’t float around the house, just like an air filter does for your HVAC system. Hard surfaces don't retain allergens; they sit on top and become airborne quite easily. Regular vacuuming and cleaning are the best way to keep allergens minimized in the home, whether it’s carpet or hard surface.

VOC emissions

Volatile organic compounds off-gas from many flooring products, especially when new. Look for FloorScore Gold, GreenGuard Gold, or similar low or zero-VOC certifications.

S&G only sources products that have zero or low VOC’s.

Mold and mildew resistance

Damp environments grow mold. Waterproof and proper installation with a moisture barrier underlayment or carpet pad prevent mold from establishing under the floor surface.

Adhesive considerations

Some flooring installations use adhesives with high VOC emissions. S&G uses premium glue with zero VOCs that also acts as a moisture barrier. Ask about low-VOC adhesive options when getting competitive bids.

Wool Carpet

Surprisingly, wool is often the best carpet for allergy households. Wool fibers are naturally hypoallergenic for most people, trap allergens until vacuumed (rather than re-releasing them), and contain no synthetic VOCs. Just like with all carpets, the key is regular vacuuming with a HEPA-filtered vacuum.

Hardwood

Hard surface allergens stay visible and can be thoroughly cleaned. Look for low or zero-VOC finishes. Most factory-finished hardwoods meet modern emissions standards.

Luxury Vinyl

Smooth, wipeable surfaces don't retain allergens. Choose products with FloorScore or GreenGuard Gold certifications. Make sure to install with a moisture barrier over concrete to prevent mold issues.

Laminate

Modern laminates meet strict emissions standards. The hard wipeable surface doesn't retain allergens. Verify the specific product's certification during your estimate.
