Accessible and Senior-Friendly Flooring

What to Consider for Accessible Flooring

Slip resistance

Wet feet, smooth socks, and rushed movement are all common fall factors. Textured wear layers such as matte LVP, low-pile carpet, and embossed sheet vinyl reduce slip risk meaningfully compared to high-gloss surfaces.

Transition heights

Walkers and wheelchairs catch on transitions taller than about 1/4 inch. Plan flooring choices so transitions between rooms are level — same height of hard surface throughout common areas, or a smooth threshold transition where carpet meets hard surface. This is where overall flooring thickness is really crucial, and a thoughtful professional installation makes the difference.

Pile height (for carpet)

Loop and patterned carpet is safer and easier to navigate for walkers and wheelchairs compared to plush carpet.

Cushion underfoot

Soft surfaces are easier on joints and reduce injury severity in case of a fall. Premium underlayment under hard surfaces and quality padding under carpet both help.

Glare reduction

Older eyes are more sensitive to glare. Matte and low-sheen finishes are easier to navigate than high-gloss surfaces, and will keep your floors looking cleaner day to day.

Our Top Accessible Flooring Recommendations

Luxury Vinyl

Smooth surface for mobility devices, slight cushion underfoot, and textured matte finishes resist slipping. Gluing luxury vinyl down prevents the mobility devices from breaking the locking mechanisms. Choose products with low-sheen wear layers.

Carpet

Carpet provides fall cushioning that hard surfaces can't match. Choose solid colors over high-contrast patterns (which can create depth-perception confusion).

Sheet Vinyl

Continuous coverage, easy to clean, and available in finishes engineered for slip resistance. Particularly common in bathrooms for senior households. Just be certain to put pads or tennis balls under areas of walkers so it doesn’t scratch the flooring.

Hardwood

If hardwood is your preference, choose a matte or satin finish over high-gloss. Add area rugs, with proper rug pads to prevent slipping, in high-traffic transition areas.
