Solid vs. Engineered Hardwood
Both are real wood and can last up to a century or longer. The difference is in how the planks are built.
Solid Hardwood
One solid piece of wood, top to bottom. Can be sanded and refinished over its lifetime. Many choose not to refinish because they fall in love with the look and characteristics of the floor that grows with their family. Reacts to humidity, so it's not the right choice for basements, bathrooms, or rooms with concrete slabs.
Engineered Hardwood
A real wood top layer, called a veneer, bonded to a plywood core. The plywood core is more stable than solid wood, allowing for longer wider planks which can make a room look more spacious. Like solid hardwood, it can also be refinished albeit fewer times.
Hardwood Species
Every hardwood floor is truly unique because it is a natural product. You can choose from many species that match your home's aesthetic.
Classic North American Species. These species are the most common: Red Oak, White Oak, Maple, Hickory, and Walnut. White oak in particular has become the modern standard for its even grain, warm-but-not-too-warm tone, and ability to take stain beautifully.
Exotic Species. Brazilian Cherry, Tigerwood, Acacia, Mahogany. Striking color and grain patterns. Adds character to rooms where the floor is meant to be part of the visual.
Bring photos of your space to a showroom, or schedule an in-home estimate, and we'll talk through which species fits your light, your decor, and how the room is used.
Width and Length
Plank width shapes the feel of the room. Narrow strips (2 ¼" to 3 ¼") read traditional. Wide planks (5" to 8" or more) read modern and feel more spacious in larger rooms. Random-width and mixed-length installations give a more rustic, custom feel.
Where Hardwood Works Best
Hardwood is ideal for all rooms of the house, especially rooms you want warmth and longevity. Hardwood is timeless and will age gracefully with your home and family.
